Bill Broderick has led the Christopher Newport women's basketball program for the last nine seasons, and has delivered an historic run during his tenure. His squads have compiled an overall record of 224-42 for a winning percentage of 84.2 percent.
The Captains recorded a 26-1 mark during the 2021-2022 season, and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year before bowing out to #10 Trinity (TX) for just their first loss of the season. The squad put together a CNU record in any sport a 43-game winning streak, and registered a pefect 22-0 regular season as well as capturing the first-ever Coast to Coast Conference Tournament Championship.
But perhaps most impressively, Broderick's postseason numbers are staggering. In eight of his first nine seasons, he has led the squad to deep NCAA Tournament runs, including a Final Four effort in 2017, an Elite Eight appearance during the 2013 tournament, and Sweet 16 finishes in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022.
Of the many highlights during Broderick's leadership, standing at the front is the banner season of 2016-17 that saw the Captains win 29 games and advance to the Final Four. The run marked the Captains’ return to the national spotlight as one of the elite programs in the nation.
After eclipsing 100 victories in just the start of his fifth season, Broderick became the fastest coach in CNU Athletics history to the century mark.
After taking over at CNU, Broderick guided the Captains in a stellar debut performance as he helped the squad reach the Elite Eight for just the second time ever in 2012-13. During the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament, Christopher Newport won the USA South Conference Tournament Championship, shared the regular season title, and eventually finished at 29-3 overall. Their .906 winning percentage stands as the second-highest single-season mark in CNU history.
During the historic run, the Captains solidified their spot in the national rankings and eventually climbed as high as 16th during the regular season before vaulting to sixth in the final D3hoops.com poll. Along the way, the team opened the year with a 13-game winning streak and eventually posted a 16-game roll, including a victory over No. 5 Montclair State in the Sweet 16, to help cap off the season. For his efforts, Broderick was named the 2012-13 VaSID State Coach of the Year.
Picking up right where he left off, Broderick followed up his impressive debut season with an outstanding 2013-14 campaign as well. During his second year with the program, he helped the Captains compile a 24-6 record and a 13-3 mark in the Capital Athletic Conference. Fittingly, Christopher Newport continued to earn respect from across the country and helped anchor the USA Today and D3hoops.com National Polls.
Over the course of the season, Broderick’s squad ripped off a 14-game winning streak and beat a pair of top-20 opponents. During the regular season, CNU took down No. 8 York, 67-64, during an overtime thriller at the Freeman Center before toppling No. 16 Ferrum, 75-66, on the road during the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Leading Christopher Newport back to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, Broderick became one of just seven coaches in NCAA history to guide a program to the Sweet 16 in each of their first two seasons with the team.
The 2015-16 season was a return to form for Broderick and the Captains, as CNU reached the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time overall, and third in four seasons under Broderick. The Captains earned another at-large berth after a tremendous regular season, and picked up two wins before bowing out to 3rd-ranked Scranton in the Sweet 16. The Captains finished the year ranked No.17 in the nation after posting a 24-5 overall record.
That success would set up the historic campaign in 2016-17, when CNU put together one of the finest seasons in program history. Climbing to as high as No. 5 in the national rankings during the regular season, CNU finished the year ranked 4th after appearing in the NCAA National Semifinals. The Captains were 29-3 overall with a 16-2 record in conference play en route to conference regular season and tournament titles. Along the way, the team would post the second longest win streak in program history with a 19-0 start to the year. In the postseason, CNU downed a pair of top ten teams before suffering the loss to undefeated national champion Amherst College in the Final Four.
Ahead of the 2017-18 season, the Captains hauled in the program’s highest ever national ranking, at No. 2 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Poll. With another 25-win campaign and run to the NCAA Sweet 16, Broderick rounded out another successful season and finished the year ranked No. 13 nationally. CNU featured one of the most dominant defenses in the nation, leading the country in steals with 534 thefts, ranking second all-time at CNU. The team outscored opponents by an average of 21.1 points per game -- the highest scoring margin in CNU lore.
That defense carried over into the 2018-19 campaign, where Christopher Newport again impressed with a young roster buoyed by 10 incoming freshmen. The Captains ranked second nationally in steals and sixth in turnovers forced. The Captains' senior class became the first unit in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament all four years of their tenure as Christopher Newport closed the year ranked No. 21 in the nation following another Sweet 16 appearance.
The suffocating defense has been a trademark of the Broderick coaching tenure at Christopher Newport as the Captains have ranked in the top five nationally in steals and turnovers forced in each of the past five seasons. His "Captains Chaos" pressure defense has registered five of the last six seasons in the top five all-time in program history for steals.
Prior to becoming the eighth women’s basketball coach in the history of the CNU program, Broderick compiled an extensive resume on the sidelines, including stints as an assistant coach at Division I programs University of Pittsburgh and University of Arizona.
Broderick came to Christopher Newport from Bucknell, where he served as Assistant Coach for two seasons, including a stint as the Interim Head Coach at the end of the 2011-12 campaign. Prior to his time with the Bison, Broderick was the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach under CNU alumna Karen Barefoot at Elon. He recruited back-to-back Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and coordinated the number one ranked recruiting class in the conference in 2009-10. Broderick’s 29-year coaching resume includes experience at nearly every level of competition, including 11 years as an NCAA Division I assistant coach. He served as an assistant at the University of Arizona from 1995-98, winning the 1996 WNIT Championship and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1998. He was also Associate Head Coach at the University of Pittsburgh where he assisted in the biggest turnaround in program history.
Along with his time at the collegiate level, Broderick was head coach at George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, guiding his team to the State Semifinals and earning Region Coach of the Year honors in 2007-08.
The Vienna, Va. native graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education in 1993 from Frostburg State University where he continued on to earn a Master of Education in Health and Physical Education in 1995.
Broderick and his wife Jennifer have two children, Cole (18) and Laney (16), and reside in Yorktown.
